Exercise: A Necessary Evil
Fact: Beer tastes better when you’ve earned it. If you stink from the gym so badly that people are fleeing from adjacent tables, this is doubly true.
Exercise may be the only thing that diets agree on. Regardless of whether an author recommends that you eat a vegan diet of raw fruits and vegetables or one consisting of zero carbohydrates and as much meat as you can choke down, all require physical activity as part of their program. They may not agree on the type, frequency, duration or intensity of that activity, but they agree on the importance.
Dr. Dean Ornish, in his Program for the Reversal of Heart Disease, recommends moderate walking for 30 minutes per day. On the opposite extreme, some advocates of the Paleo Cave Man Diet endorse exercising at the level of an Olympic champion. Dr. Atkins, in New Diet Revolution, splits the difference, recommending moderate walking at first and then intense weight lifting and aerobics as you lose weight and your body becomes more accustomed to physical activity. Even the USDA “MyPlate” requires physical activity. MyPlate recommends 30 minutes, five days a week, and includes a warning that reveals everything you need to know about their target market: “grocery shopping” does not count.
Regardless of the path you choose to lose weight exercise must become part of your life.
